This week I used the Roots magazine for the creative prayer. Affirmed by God:God affirmed Jesus by calling him a ‘beloved Son’. We all need affirmation for our well-being. Invite people to turn to face the person next to them, and to find something affirming to say to them, beginning with ‘You are’.
As 2020 has just begun it is good to look back at 2019 to remember what God has done for us in that yoear and look forward and think about times in this year where we may need God’s help and guidance.
This week I focused on things in life that brings us joy. The idea is for the congregation to write down (maybe on the back of a smiley face?) things that bring them joy in life. These could be hung up on a tree or put in a basket at the front of the church.
This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'” Matthew 3:3
This verse talks about preparing a way for the Lord. I found a response prayer (I think that’s what it’s called) and I thought it would be a good idea for this week:
Prepare the way of the Lord: Make his paths straight, bringing honour to his name. Prepare the way of the Lord: With courage and kindness, honesty and hope. Prepare the way of the Lord: With much strength or little, whatever you have. Prepare the way of the Lord: With a smile, a helping hand, and a listening ear. Prepare the way of the Lord: With words of vision and encouragement, challenge and direction. Prepare the way of the Lord: With acts of compassion, and generous hearts. Prepare the way of the Lord: For the young, the old, and all in between. Prepare the way of the Lord. Though the world seems against you, and the road may be hard. Prepare the way of the Lord: Make his paths straight, bringing honour to his name. Prepare the way of the Lord.
When it’s dark, I would normally use a torch to make it brighter so it’s easier to see. It’s the same in life, if we in darkness and lost in life, we can ask God to light up our lives and sow us the way. God’s light shows us the way for our lives. When I think of God’s light I think of candles. In the darkest parts of our lives God’s light and guidance shows us the way, just like a candle can show the way around a dark room.
Prayer:
Light some candles at the front of the church for people to focus on. Ask people to pray for God to be a light in their life and for them to walk with him in their life.
This week I looked at Psalm 98 which is all about worshipping God. The chapter calls for us to ‘shout for joy to the Lord, all the Earth, burst into jubilant song with music.’ Something that sometimes happened at WVCC is that everyone would burst into praise and start praying and singing what was on their heart at the same time and I always felt God’s presence in these moments.
