It is perhaps appropriate that our journey to Glasgow begins on the Stockton and Darlington line. The industrial revolution and the combination of Durham coalfields and railways ushered us into a modern era of greater prosperity, but we have learnt came at the cost of rising emissions, increased carbon dioxide levels in the environment, and global climate change. New trains made locally in Newton Aycliffe and a greater commitment to sustainable public transport might just help us move to a new greener prosperity for the planet.
